Chief Justice Discusses support and Cooperation with the Representative of the Netherlands in Palestine

Chief Justice Chancellor Issa Abu Sharar met with the Representative of the Netherlands in Palestine Mr. Kees van Baar to reiterate Netherlands' commitment and readiness to support justice sector in Palestine, so that justice sector can response to challenges facing Judicial Authority and safeguard public rights and freedoms.

 

The meeting was held in the presence of HJC Secretary General Asad Shunnar and from Netherlands delegation First Secretary Justice Ms. Woude, Berber-vander.

 

Chancellor Abu Sharar talked about the current situation of judiciary and challenges faced running of the work in courts posed by health, economic and social crisis.

 

Chief justice emphasized that Transitional High Judicial Council is paying attention to ensure the persistence of minimal official working hours in courts during quarantine, in which the council has dealt with requests for release and retreat of detention orders and urgent cases.

 

Chancellor Abu Sharar mentioned that there are challenges facing the transferring detainees between governorates due to complex security measures. H.E. added that due to lockdown, the backlog of cases has raised in courts and judges' training programs has stopped; and partially affected the plan of Transitional Judicial Council; knowing that the council is continuing work to redress the postponed work as circumstances allow.

  

Chancellor Abu Sharar acknowledged the delegation with amendments process for legislations and laws that speed up case disposal, specially replacing traditional notification system with electronic systems.

For his part, Mr. Kees van Baar assured the commitment of donors on supporting Palestinian Judiciary through several projects which enhance rule of law. He also indicated that in spite of the current circumstances and challenges resulted from COVID-19 pandemic, Netherlands is studying the possibility of raising the level of support delivered to Palestinian Judiciary to overcome its challenges.
