Chief Justice Meets Delegation from British Consulate-General

Chief Justice Chancellor Issa Abu Sharar met with delegation from British Consulate-General to discuss the possibility of resuming a program of support; knowing that the British Consulate-General has commissioned a team to undertake an assessment of Palestinian Justice Sector needs.

The delegation was chaired by Team leader Nicholas Robson, Legal Advisor Mustafa Marai and Liaison officer Dana AlNatour in the presence of Secretary General Assad Shunnar.

Chancellor Abu Sharar reviewed the role of Transitional High Judicial Council represented in restructuring judiciary, preparing legislation drafts that supports judicial reform and facilitate case disposal for cases filed in courts; H.E. mentioned also that the findings of a study has shown a decrease in number of cases filed in court since the transitional council has started its tasks last July.

Chief justice assured that the Transitional High Judicial Council prepared a plan for training the newly appointed judges, and the council in process of supporting judicial system with assistant administrative staff, and restructuring Judicial Inspection Department as it is the most important departments of the council.  

Chancellor Abu Sharar emphasized that the Transitional High Judicial Council is working on undertaking its plan within the ed period that giving to it by law, including an increase in number of judges to reach 300 judges by the end of 2020. In addition, H.E. welcomed any support from British Consulate-General and UK Government, consistent with Transitional Council plan.

For his part, Mr. Robson assured that the commissioned team is going to study the current situation of judiciary and then submit the recommendations on the required needs of Justice Sector, pointing out that the team comprised of Palestinian and British experts.

Both parties agreed on holding continuous meetings towards preparing general perception on justice system needs in general and judicial in specific.
