On June 15, 2015 – The opening of the final session of Roundtable Event was attended by Minister of Justice Salim Saqa, Attorney General Abd Alghany Owewi, Chairman of Palestinian Bar Association Hussein Shabaneh, Chief of Palestinian Police for criminal investigation Brigadier General Abdel Jabber Burqan, the Commissioner General of Independence Commission for Human Rights Dr. Ahmad Harb, Deputy Head of EUPOL COPPS Mission Dirk Vandersmissen, legal experts and representatives from judicial institutions.
Chief Justic Ali Muhana emphasized the importance of promoting integration amongst all justice sector partners especially in procedural aspects.
During the session, key speakers acknowledged that the fundamental requirement of fair trial is that all citizens must be entitled to a fair and public hearing by independent and impartial tribunal established by law.
The final session of roundtable event concluded with several recommendations:
- Enhance cooperation amongst all justice sector partners to facilitate access to justice.
- Ensure updating Criminal Legislations to cope with latest changes and recent procedures regards to anti crimes; issuing Penal Code guarantees public and private deterrence, Juvenile Justice Law and making a comprehensive revision for Criminal Procedures Law.
- Observe international standards for fair trial.
- Train justice sector staff in Palestine on international standards for fair trial.
- Confirm Legal Aid Law.
- Enable the lawyers to represent the accused since the first day of detention at police station.
- Establish forensic lab.
- Prepare doctors specialized in forensic medicine.
- Control and emphasis the legality of pretrial procedures.
